Waste Management and Climate Change
نویسنده
چکیده
Waste management has at least ve types of impacts on climate change, attributable to: (1) land ll methane emissions; (2) reduction in industrial energy use and emissions due to recycling and waste reduction; (3) energy recovery from waste; (4) carbon sequestration in forests due to decreased demand for virgin paper; and (5) energy used in long-distance transport of waste: A recent USEPA study provides estimates of overall per-tonne greenhouse gas reductions due to recycling. Plausible calculations using these estimates suggest that countries such as the US or Australia could realise substantial greenhouse gas reductions through increased recycling, particularly of paper.

متن کاملIntegrated waste management as a climate change stabilization wedge.
Anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gas emissions are known to contribute to global increases in greenhouse gas concentrations and are widely believed to contribute to climate change. A reference carbon dioxide concentration of 383 ppm for 2007 is projected to increase to a nominal 500 ppm in less than 50 years according to business as usual models. This concentration change is equivalent to an...
متن کاملLife Cycle Environmental Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste to Energy Technologies
The study aimed to analyze potential environmental burdens of different waste-to-energy technologies through LCA model. LCA model is developed by SimaPro software by considering Ecoindicator 99 method. Landfill, Incineration, Pyrolysis-Gasification and Anaerobic Digestion are analyzed by considering emission to the atmosphere per unit electricity generation. Results show that, Landfill and Inci...
متن کاملTheoretical Framework for Plastic Waste Management in Ghana through Extended Producer Responsibility: Case of Sachet Water Waste.
Currently, use and disposal of plastic by consumers through waste management activities in Ghana not only creates environmental problems, but also reinforces the notion of a wasteful society. The magnitude of this problem has led to increasing pressure from the public for efficient and practical measures to solve the waste problem. This paper analyses the impact of plastic use and disposal in G...
متن کاملScaling Up Sustainable Renewable Energy Generation from Municipal Solid Waste in the African Continent: Lessons from eThekwini, South Africa
The three processes of urbanization, industrialization and globalization are positively correlated with municipal solid waste generation and energy consumption in global urban centers. Heavy reliance on fossil fuels in most world cities has contributed not only to global warming and climate change, but also to astronomical increases and volatility in the prices of energy sources. Africa has suf...
